We’ve kept it under wraps until everything was certain, but it’s officially official — we’re building a house!
A couple months ago, we casually started looking for options that would put us in the Brighton area, equidistant from both of our jobs. We fell in love with a neighborhood on a golf course, put a deposit down on the perfect lot, and began the process of getting financing. Meanwhile, we put our condo on the market (it sold in 24 hours!) and began packing for the move into temporary housing.
The eighth hole, right behind our future home
It took a little while, but we got the ‘ok’ minutes before we walked in to close on the sale of the condo. To say we were ecstatic is an understatement. We definitely didn’t think everything would happen so quickly, and when it did, it almost felt too good to be true.
The location of the sub, and the lot itself we’ll be building on, are just dreamy. Ours is a corner lot on a secluded side street, with large mature trees everywhere you look.
The view from the neighbor’s driveway
We’ll be close to two major highways, and a shopping area with a Target, Wal-Mart, and Meijer — what more could you need?!
Here are a few more photos from the model. Our new home will have a similar floorplan, with a slightly different kitchen layout. It’s three bedrooms (plus a bonus room), two and a half baths, and a smidge over 2,300 square feet before accounting for the basement, which we hope to finish within the first couple years of living there.
I have no interest in putting siding on the interior of our house, but the bonus room will make a great secondary TV room!
As far as next steps and timeline, we are currently waiting to hear from the builder, Allen Edwin, to schedule an appointment in their showroom to pick out all of our finishes. Once that is complete and everything is finalized, they will break ground shortly after and we’ll receive a guaranteed occupancy date. When we originally signed on with AE, they were estimating 5-6 months for completion, so we hope to be in our new place shortly after the first of the year.
Troy and I have talked about building a house for a long time and, while we know doing so comes with its own sets of stressors and challenges, we are very much looking forward to the process. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on the progress, along with some decorating inspiration as well!
